Frequently asked questions

What does Medigap actually cover?

Medigap (Medicare Supplement) fills the gaps in Original Medicare. Medicare pays ~80% of covered costs; Medigap picks up the rest. Depending on the plan, it can cover: Medicare deductibles ($1,756 Part A, $226 Part B), copayments, coinsurance, foreign travel emergencies, and excess charges. It does NOT cover dental, vision, hearing, prescription drugs (Part D is separate), or long-term care.

Should I choose Medigap or Medicare Advantage?

Medigap + Original Medicare gives you the widest choice of providers (any doctor that takes Medicare) with predictable out-of-pocket costs. Medicare Advantage (Part C) bundles hospital, medical, and often drug coverage into one plan, usually cheaper monthly, but typically uses HMO/PPO networks and has annual out-of-pocket maximums. Medigap is better if you travel, need specialist care, or want no network restrictions.

Can I get Medigap if I have pre-existing conditions?

During your Medigap open enrollment period (6 months after turning 65 and getting Part B), carriers CANNOT deny you or charge extra for pre-existing conditions. After that window, they can use medical underwriting — and many carriers will deny or charge more. If you're 65 or approaching it, mark your calendar.
