Frequently asked questions

How much does long-term care cost actually cost?

National averages for 2025: private nursing home room is ~$108k/year, assisted living is ~$54k/year, home health aide is ~$60k/year. Costs vary dramatically by state — California and NY are 2-3x more than midwestern states. And costs rise 3-5% annually with inflation.

Is long-term care insurance worth it?

Yes if: you have $75k-$300k in assets to protect and could afford the premiums for 10+ years. No if: you're already wealthy enough to self-insure the cost, or if your income is tight enough that premiums would cause financial stress. Medicare does NOT cover long-term care.

What's the best age to buy?

Industry consensus: age 50-55 is the sweet spot. Before 50, premiums are very low but you're unlikely to be declined (good health). After 55, each year gets 6-8% more expensive. After 65, it's hard to qualify and premiums are very high.
