Coverage limits to look for

How travel insurance premiums are priced

Most single-trip policies price somewhere between 4% and 10% of the insured trip cost, and four variables move that number around more than anything else.

  • Age of the oldest traveller. Claims risk rises steeply after 60. A traveller in their sixties commonly pays 1.5ร— what a traveller in their thirties pays for the same itinerary, and past roughly 75 many carriers cap cover or decline new single-trip business entirely.
  • Destination. Itineraries that include the USA price higher because medical treatment there costs more than anywhere else. Everything else being equal, "worldwide excluding USA" is cheaper than worldwide including it.
  • Trip cost and length. The premium is anchored to the non-refundable amount you are protecting, and long slow trips carry more exposure than short ones even when the insured value is similar.
  • Deductible and plan level. Moving from $250 to $1,000 typically trims roughly 20% off the premium; stepping up plan level raises the sub-limits for medical, evacuation and baggage rather than the headline structure.

What you actually buy falls into four buckets: trip cancellation and interruption (the prepaid, non-refundable money), emergency medical (treatment abroad, where your domestic plan usually stops paying), medical evacuation (transport to adequate care or home, which can reach six figures), and baggage and delay. Add-ons such as adventure-sports cover and cancel-for-any-reason are priced on top.

A worked example

Two travellers, ten days in Europe, $3,500 of non-refundable cost each, oldest traveller 34, comprehensive plan, $250 deductible, no add-ons. The base rate is 6.0% of trip cost:

  • Per traveller: 3,500 ร— 0.060 = $210. No age loading (34 sits in the base band), no destination loading for Europe, and ten days is inside the no-loading window.
  • Total for the party: 210 ร— 2 = $420, which is 6.0% of the total trip cost โ€” $42 per day across the party, or $21 per traveller per day.
  • Expect real quotes to spread from roughly $336 to $567 for a similar plan.

Add cancel-for-any-reason and the per-traveller figure becomes 210 ร— 1.40 = $294, or $588 for the party โ€” worth comparing against the trip cost, because CFAR generally reimburses 50% to 75% rather than 100%.

Change the trip to a four-day domestic break costing $1,200 for a 68-year-old on the essential plan with a $500 deductible and the arithmetic shifts sharply: 1,200 ร— 0.032 ร— 1.45 (age) ร— 0.85 (domestic) ร— 0.90 (deductible) โ‰ˆ $43.

What these policies typically exclude

Read the exclusions before you rely on the headline number. Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless you buy the waiver, and the waiver itself is time-limited. Adventure and hazardous activities โ€” scuba beyond a certified depth, off-piste skiing, mountaineering above a stated altitude, motorsports โ€” are excluded without an endorsement. Claims arising from alcohol or drugs, from travelling against government advice, or from events that were already known or foreseeable when you bought the policy are generally declined. Epidemic wording varies by insurer, and standard trip-cancellation cover only pays for the specific named reasons listed in the policy โ€” changing your mind is not one of them.

Limitations of this estimate

The multipliers here are illustrative, calibrated to commonly cited market ranges, and they are applied multiplicatively for transparency. Real carriers use their own tables, apply their own rounding, and weight factors differently โ€” some barely load for trip length, others load heavily for travellers over 70. Annual multi-trip plans, cruise-specific cover and adventure-only policies are not modelled at all. Nothing here reflects a specific insurer's filing or your insurability.

Frequently asked questions

How much does travel insurance usually cost?

Single-trip policies commonly land somewhere between 4% and 10% of the insured trip cost. A $4,000 trip therefore often prices between roughly $160 and $400. Age is the single biggest driver: travellers in their sixties and seventies routinely pay 1.5 to 2.5 times what a traveller in their thirties pays for the same itinerary.

Why does the USA cost more to insure?

Because medical care there costs more. Insurers price US-inclusive itineraries higher than trips that exclude the USA, which is why many policies have a separate "worldwide including USA" rate. Raise the medical limit accordingly: medical evacuation from the USA can run into six figures without cover.

Does my regular health insurance cover me abroad?

Usually not, or only partially. US domestic plans including Medicare typically provide little or no cover outside the country, and most foreign providers want payment up front. Travel policies add the two things domestic plans do not: emergency medical treatment abroad and medical evacuation, which repatriates you if local care is inadequate.

What is cancel for any reason?

An add-on that reimburses part of your trip cost even when the reason for cancelling is not one of the standard covered reasons. It typically adds 40% to 60% to the premium, must be bought within about 14 to 21 days of your first trip payment, insures 100% of prepaid costs, and reimburses 50% to 75% rather than the full amount.

When should I buy travel insurance?

As soon as you put money down, because several valuable benefits are time-sensitive. The pre-existing condition waiver and cancel-for-any-reason cover both expire roughly two to three weeks after your initial trip deposit, so buying the day before departure removes exactly the benefits people buy the policy for.

Are adventure sports covered?

Not by default. Standard policies exclude or cap cover for scuba diving beyond a certified depth, skiing off-piste, mountaineering above a stated altitude, motorsports and similar activities. Look for an adventure or hazardous-activities endorsement and read the activity list: what one insurer covers another excludes.
